2016 Goddard Cup – Preliminary Round – Away vs Saffron Walden

Saturday 9th July

The Goddard Cup is an 8 man team Scratch event, where 4 x foursomes matches are played in the AM followed by 8 x singles matches in the PM.

Following our bye in the Preliminary round Bourn’s reward was an away trip to arguably the best scratch squad in the County in the Quarter Finals. With 36 holes to be played on a day where the club was a busy, it meant an early start for Bourn’s players.

On arrival, the course looked splendid, and the Bourn players wasted no time in taking advantage of the superb practice facilities available with the Chipping green, the practice putting green and the nets, all located near the first tee.

It was always going to be a tough match against what is a great scratch squad (they have 25 category one players) and this was made harder when Bourn had to travel without their 4 best players.

It was a big victory for Saffron Walden who ran out 11-1 winners, but Bourn’s performances should be celebrated against such good opposition, especially Andy Barnard and John Wood who both managed fine halves in the afternoon singles.

Foursomes results 4-0

Reeve & Brown bt John Wood and Tony Roitman 4&3

Brookes & Burlingham bt  Iain Clark & Chris Offer 4&3

Fraser & Goodman bt Dan Edwards and Simon Hodgson 1dn

Macdonald & Goodfellow bt Andy Barnard and Coling Biggs 8&7
Singles results 7-1

Reeve bt Iain Clark 7&6

Brookes halved with John Wood

Brown bt Dan Edwards 5&4

Macdonald bt Simon Hodgson 6&4

Bulringham bt Chris Offer 6&4

Fraser halved with Andy Barnard

Goodman bt Colin Boggs 4&2

Goodfellow bt Tony Roitman 8&7

Not a great day out for Bourn, but golf was truly the winner on what is one of the best tracks in the County.

Many thanks to the team who gave up their whole day and represented Bourn in what is a very prestigious competition.

Bring on 2017.

2016 Goddard Cup – Preliminary Round – Away vs the Cambridgeshire

Was not played.

The Goddard Cup is an 8 man team Scratch event, where 4 x foursomes matches are played in the AM followed by 8 x singles matches in the PM.

As the County has 14 teams, 12 teams compete in a preliminary round (2 x foursomes and 4 singles matches) to earn the right to join the holders (Ely City) and the hosts (Saffron Walden) in the Quarter Finals.

This year’s preliminary draw saw Bourn drawn away to the Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately their club captain was not briefed on what was expected and was unable to raise a team at short notice.

This has resulted in Bourn going straight through into the Quarter finals.

The closing date for the preliminary round is the 22nd May and the quarter final draw will be posted here submitted.
