2016 Scratch League – Match 8 – Away vs Girton
Wednesday 13th July, 5:30pm
In this winner takes all match away at Girton, it was a chance to make our great season show with a deserved championship win.
A 4-2 victory would all but assure Bourn of winning what looks to be CAGU’s last ever division 3 championship. A tall order when going away in this league, but not impossible.
Match 1 saw Andy Stubbs back with Adam Chesters reunited and welcomed by a Girton course in great condition and in perfect golfing weather. It was Andy and Adam that got off to the faster start going 3 up through the first 9 with some good golf being played.
As Girton is a very tight driving course especially on the back 9, a number of poor drives by Bourn were punished and losing 3 out of 4 holes meant it was honors’ even through 13 holes. A great half in a pair of birdies on 14 saw the match stay at A/S. Girton forgetting to read our script then played the remaining 4 holes at -1 and won the match 3 up.
Match 2 put together the two Neils as Randall and Tailby played together for the first time this year.
In Neil R’s own words ‘We were awesome’.
With some great driving coming from Neil R, some incredible pitching from Neil T, and the inevitable putt out from Neil R, Bourn were just too strong for Girton and finished the match 1 under par.
It was a great day for this pairing as Neil R even managed a chip in to win the match and recorded a great 5 up win!
This looks like the start of a very promising pairing for the future of Bourn’s Scratch Team.
Match 3 paired Craig Sutherland and Any Barnard together who were unlucky to draw Girton’s best player in the 3rd pair slot. Neither of the Bourn boys played their best and an unfortunate poor start left them with a mountain to climb.
Chasing the game and having to take risky shots on just compounded the problem and they lost more ground on Girton’s pair. Eventually shaking hands on 11 down.
Unfortunately this resulted in Bourn coming second for the second year in a row in Division 3, and a disappointing end to what was a bright start.
The final league tables have not been published as this is written, this but the top of Div 3 looks like:
|Played||Holes Up||Holes Dn||Points For||Points Against|
Congratulations to Girton.
Finally, many thanks to every member of the Scratch team who played this year!
Andy Stubbs, Adam Chesters, Craig Sutherland, Neil Tailby, Joel Rickard, John Wood, Andy Barnard, Neil Randall, Mark Lydon, Colin Biggs, Dan Edwards, David Greef and Tony Roitman.
Thanks for reading, please get behind the boys for 2017!
2016 Scratch League – Match 7 – Away vs Nene Park
Wednesday 06th July, 5:30pm
Following yet another bye, our brave scratch team set out to do battle against one of the Counties most distant rivals, Nene Park in Match 7. Nene Park Golf Club is the result of the amalgamation of two courses in Peterborough Orton Meadows and Thorpe Wood.
Historically Thorpe Wood had a scratch team and Orton Meadows did not, so we suspected the Home team would pick the longer track of the two and we were not surprised to find out this was indeed the case.
Match 1 saw Andy Stubbs paired with old time Scratch partner Craig Sutherland, and form arguably our strongest pairing at the club. A solid start saw Crandy go up early on and maintained that thru a nip and tuck match that reached a 2up lead with a birdie on 14. 3 sloppy holes saw the hosts take the lead from nowhere, and Bourn found themselves dormi 1 down. A superb birdie on the last salvaged a well deserved half.
Match 2 another famous pairing from the past with Andy Barnard and David Greed paired together. A poor start saw the Bourn pair 3 down after 3 and this seemed to set the tone, 4 down after 6 but an heroic double reduced the deficit to 2 down after 8. 3 down at the turn our pair made a lot of good halves until the match was finally lost 4&3.
Nene Park really pressed home their advantage when they birdied 16th to help them win the last 3 for a 7 up win.
Match 3 paired 2016 scratch team find John Wood with 2015 Scratch Shootout winner Tony Roitman. Steady golf from this pair was enough for the points, with Tony keeping it simple an hitting irons of the tee, rarely missing a fairway. Woody applying his now trade mark super wedges to the greens resulted in 5up at the turn. After a little dip in focus and re-concentration was applied Bourn shook hands the victor on the 16th . Two final halves gave Bourn a great 4 up win in the final pairing.
This put Bourn on 19 points for, 11 against with a GD of +19 going into the last game away vs Girton!!
With Girton winning their penultimate match 5-1 and +4, to give them 21 points for, 9 against and GD of +14, it meant that they edged to the top of the table after Bourn had occupied top spot all season and a 4-2 victory in their own back yard was needed to win division 3.
Next match Wednesday 13th July Away vs Girton.
2016 Scratch League – Match 6 – Home vs Meridian
Wednesday 22nd June, 5:30pm
Coming back after a 2 week break (the mid-season break was extended as our fixture vs The Cambridgeshire was not played following their withdrawal from the league) and a great Trackman session with Head Coaching professional Ben Kerr, Bourn were keen to carry on the fine form that saw them sitting on top of the league into the second half of the season.
Match 6 saw us host our local rivals Meridian.
Match 1 saw 100%ers Andy Stubbs and Adam Chesters carry on the fine form that has seen them become the first names on the team sheet every week. The pair set of extremely quickly and were 4 up after 5 holes with 3 birdies and 2 pars! 6, 7, 8 and 9 saw Meridian rally with halves, the visiting side needing a chip in birdie to get the half on 9.
Bourn then won the 11th with a par and they won the hole and match with a birdie on 13!
As is the way in Scratch league the pair have to play out and Bourn recorded a very useful 5up win with their best performance of the year.
Match 2 saw the club competition pairing of Craig Sutherland and Dan Edwards paired for the first time in Scratch foursomes. The match was very nip and tuck with both pairs showing glimpses of what they can do and leading to a nail biting A/S after 16. Unfortunately a loose approach shot on 17 handed the visitors a 1up lead with 1 hole to play.
Bourn made the green in regulation and with Meridian still 140 yards away after 2, 1 point a side seemed the likely outcome. However, Meridian failing to read the script played a great up and down to half the hole and win the match 1 up.
Match 3 saw another new pairing with 2016 rooky John Wood being paired with Colin Biggs playing against Meridian’s young guns. After 6 holes Bourn had secured a 1up lead courtesy of some steady, error free golf, whilst Meridian had found water a couple of times.
However a run of 3 birdies from Meridian over the next 5 holes saw Bourn fall 2 down. Bourn made pars on 12 and 13 making the match finely balanced with Bourn 1 down and 5 to play. 3 putts on 14, tree trouble on 15 and Meridian’s birdie on 16 wrapped up the match for the visitors 4up.
Bourn lost the match vs Meridian 2-4, with 0 GD.
Thanks once again to Alex and the catering staff for a great meal and to the green keepers for keeping the course in such good condition with such difficult weather conditions.
Next match Wednesday 6th July Away vs Nene Park. This is out penultimate match, and a couple of good showings should see promotion out of division 3.
2016 Scratch League – Match 4 – Home vs Girton
Wednesday 01 st June, 5:30pm
All too soon the Scratch League has reached it’s halfway point and with the start of June we welcomed Girton Golf Club to Bourn for our 4 th Match of the league, but only our 2 nd match where golf was actually played!
The match pitted first vs second in our division, and this result would go some way to seeing who will top the division in July. As it was the first day of summer, it was good to see all 12 players donning full waterproofs and even the occasional Beanie hat!
Pair 1 saw Andy Stubbs and Adam Chesters lead us out again, and with some good golf played the pressure of getting those vital two points was relieved with a dormi 3 conclusion to their match. A great front 9 saw an early commanding lead that was never relinquished until hands were shaken. A spirited fight back from the final pair saw the result reduced to 1up. It is always nice to get a good ‘goal difference’ but against the strongest team in the division the 2 points and the ‘W’ was the most important result.
Pair 2 enabled Craig Sutherland and Neil Tailby to show their abilities against arguably Girton’s strongest pairing. In a very up and down match, a lot of good golf was played, but Bourn were up against some outrageous chipping and putting, which ensured this match was the tightest of all three on the night.
Some great clutch putting from Craig in the final third saw Bourn stay with the Girton match until a loss, meant that Neil and Craig were standing on the 18th tee 1 down. A good chip from Neil gave Craig the chance to ‘steal’ back a point with a tricky 4 footer to win the hole and half the match. Of course Craigo made it for a 1 point half.
Pair 3 gave Joel Rickard the chance to play with debutant John Wood. Joel and John played some good stuff early doors but found themselves down in a see-saw match. Some loose shots around 10, 11, 12 meant the Bourn pair had to dig in to stay in with Girton, but weather the storm they did and finished in spectacular style to win the last 2 to get the 2 points (and the +2 GD) in a 2 up win.
Special mention to John for his admirable performance in his first turn out in the Scratch Team.
Bourn won the match vs Girton 5-1, with a +3 GD.
This was a great victory and made the delicious steak pie taste even better, so thank you once again to Alex and his catering staff. Many positive comments were heard from the Girton boys too.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the green staff and committee for providing such an improvement in the greens over the last couple of weeks. The course looked as good as it ever does and it made playing in such grizzly conditions much more palatable.
Next match Wednesday 22 nd June Home vs Meridian.
Next week is a free week due to our opponents The Cambridgeshire withdrawing from the league.
The following week is a mid-season break.
2016 Scratch League – Match 3 – Home vs the Nene Park
Wednesday 25 th May, 5:30pm
Yet again, it is with frustration that I have to regrettably report, that unfortunately Nene Park Golf Club
Scratch Team was unable to raise a team for this match.
However due to the club staying in Division 3 and hoping to play their remaining games, CAGU rules
state that the ‘No-Show’ team shall lose all 3 matches with a score for each match = 5 down.
Next match Wednesday 1 st June Home vs Girton.
2016 Scratch League – Bye
Wednesday 18 th May, 5:30pm
Next match Wednesday 25 th June Home vs Nene Park
2016 Scratch League – Match Day 2 – Away vs Meridian
Wednesday 11th May, 5:30pm
Match day 2 saw Bourn visit local rivals Meridian.
Match 1 saw Andy Stubbs and Adam Chesters playing for Bourn, and they got off to a fast start, 2 up thru 3, Meridian, fought hard to get back to level thru 6, only to give away the next 4 holes to par. Another par on 14 saw Bourn claim the match 5&4. Scratch match rules dictate that all 18 holes will be played and further excitement was to be seen when Adam narrowly missed a hole in one to finish 2 feet from the pin on 17. Not to be outdone, Meridian, put their tee shot to 6 inches for the half. A great birdie on 18, so Bourn complete the match 7 up.
Match 2 saw Neil Tailby and Craig Sutherland losing the first, and play catch up for the remainder of the round. Standing on the 9th tee at 2 down, the Bourn pairing were looking for some inspiration, and after both teams had played their second shots to the green, Bourn were 40 feet away with Meridian 4 feet away. Craig holed out from downtown and Meridian missed, thus turning a very real 3 down into a much more promising 1 down. From then on it was nip and tuck and after getting back to all square on 16, then giving away 17, before a good win on 18 resulted in honours even in a hard fought match.
Match 3 saw Mark Lydon and Joel Rickard paired up. Unfortunately the hosts got off to a great start and Bourn were 2 down thru 6. Things were to get worse for Bourn with Meridian posting consecutive birdies on 9, 10 and 11 that took the game away from the visitors. Highlighting the quality of golf seen in scratch league, the Bourn pair were 4 over after 18 holes, and lost the match 4 down!
It was also noted that Meridian was in excellent condition, and each match was played in a great spirit with excellent company supplied from the hosts in each of the 3 matches.
A halved match with 3 points going to each side was rounded off nicely with a pint and some homemade lasagne and chips.
Good work men, onto the next round.
Bourn’s next home fixture is the 25th May vs Nene Park, if you are at a loose end please feel free to come along and support the team.
2016 Scratch League – Match Day 1 – Home vs the Cambridgeshire
Wednesday 4th May, 5:30pm
2016 sees Bourn Scratch team spending a second year in division three after missing out on promotion by the narrowest of margins last year!
The season’s first match was meant to see Bourn host the Cambridgeshire in the 6 man team playing 3 x foursomes matches.
However unfortunately the Cambridgeshire Captain was unable to raise a team of scratch players and has regrettably withdrawn his Golf Club from County scratch matches. This has meant that Division 3 now only has 4 teams in the division which has resulted in a 2 game reduction to 6 games. Discussions with the County competition’s secretary have already yielded admission that the structure will have to change for the 2017 season.
